Please Pray

I think it goes without saying, but please pray for all of the little (and big) lives lost today, and for each and every one who was personally effected by the horrible tragedy in Connecticut.

Noah needs a lot of prayers right now.  He is being admitted and it's serious.  Please lift him up.

Brayden earned his wings...

Please be in deep prayer for Brayden's family.  He earned his wings and became an angel on Thursday.  I apologize for the late post, I was out of the country and had no access.  If you have the time, please stop by and lift this family up in prayer.  I know they can use it.

Emerson needs many prayers...

From her mom's most recent Facebook post:

After an end of week meeting with the PICU attending & transplant doctor, the message today is they do not believe Emerson can recover from this. And if she can, they say there's little to no chance of her returning to baseline. My heart is breaking...

They also said, though, there are no decisions to be made right now. Emerson was not able to wean on the vent today & as such they've decided to stop trying. They'll let her rest through the weekend & see is she's able to show us any sign that she can overcome what ever is going on. If not, there will be decisions to be made next week... for the next 2 days, though, I'm going to try hard to put it out of my mind & concentrate, instead, on just loving her.

In a new development, Emerson's right arm has swollen to nearly double it's s
ize and is turning black & blue. At the same time, the (very little) urine she's producing is dark orange. Apparently that can be the byproduct of muscle break down & the concern is she may have an infection in the muscle of her right arm. They're checking markers in her blood and urine & have scheduled an MRI for early this evening. It's unclear what exactly could be done about it, but it would certainly bring me some peace to better understand what is happening to her right now...

Beyond all that, I've not forgotten how many times we've received devastating news about Emerson in the past... and how many times she's proven the medical professionals wrong. This time feels different to me, but still I'm not giving up hope. I'm playing Disney piano music in her room & am trying the best I can to stay positive around her. We are in an incredibly difficult place and really appreciate all your prayers - if we storm the heavens & if He hears, maybe just maybe He'll let her stay with me a little longer... Thank you.

URGENT - Prayers needed for Emerson

Emerson is in urgent need of prayer. From her mom's Facebook update 3 hours ago:

Blood gases continue to look poor, base deficit is high (indicating a worsening metabolic acidosis), lactate is increasing. Emerson is very sick. The decision was made to take her to the OR stat to remove her line & look for new, temporary access. There is significant concern they won't find anything & cardiology is on standby to come in for a venous cut down, balloon placement, &/or creative wiring, as indicated, to achieve access. The team believes if they don't take her soon we'll lose our window to safely get her through surgery. She'll return to the room intubated & remain that way until gases improve and things are better under control. The vent will take away her work of breathing & hopefully give her more energy to fight this infection. The million dollar question now is, where is it all coming from? If it's a line infection Emerson has a chance at clearing it. If it's seeding from a deteriorating bowel there's no hope. I've had lengthy conversations with everyone here - transplant, PICU, surgery, etc. We are in a potentially difficult spot & are taking this one decision at a time. I've formally enacted a DNR for chest compressions & cardio electric shock...

Please keep them all in your prayers.

More prayers needed

Noah's mom, Kate, posted the following update on Facebook just a few minutes ago.  Please lift them up in prayer:

Well, rats. I really totally expected this echo to be a non-event so to speak . . . but it wasn't. Noah's heart function is decreasing and his heart is enlarged. This was checked and rechecked, and both the echo and the EKG showed the same results.

I hate this.

We'll be talking to our cardiologist again this afternoon as he wanted time to think and to talk to a couple of Noah's other doctors. We are VERY much backed up against a wall here as Noah can't have any oral heart medicines and the IV ones are dangerous for home use. Right off the bat, Dr. R feels like trying to treat Noah's heart with IV meds could actually cause harm instead of treating it. Noah just has SO MUCH going on and his balance is so fragile, and when you add in the dynamic of IV meds only, then things just seem to get impossible sometimes.

Brayden and family are moving to Washington on Monday.  They are requesting prayers for safe travels and the avoidance of hospitals along the way!

Joshua has been hit hard with a bug that's been running through the family and this is very dangerous for him. The family is asking for prayers that Joshua will get over this illness swiftly and without any sign of further decline as a result of having been sick.

Blessings,
Amy

Prayers Needed

Joshua is not doing well.  His parents are starting to have "end of life" conversations with the doctors.  They are desparately in need of prayer.

In addition, his sister, Bethany, is recovering from heart surgery and complications are causing her incisions to open up and causing all kinds of pain and problems for this sweet little girl.  She may have to be admitted to the hospital (which is quite a ways away) and their mom is being torn in two between her two sweet fragile children.  Please lift them all up in prayer.

Angela went home to be with the Lord.  Please pray for her family as they mourn this devastating loss.

Amelie was diagnosed roughly 10 days ago with Medulloblastoma.  She has had surgery and has more coming up.  They have a long road ahead of them so please keep them in your prayers.  I went to high school with her father.

Jonah and his family have welcomed a new baby boy!  Pray that all will work out and that this sweet baby will be theirs forever.

Josiah is losing weight and not able to tolerate full feeds.  Please keep them in your prayers.

Jacob had a scary episode while his family was out at the botanical garden and is now in PICU.  Pray for them.

As always, please feel free to leave prayer requests or updates in the comments section or send me an email.

Blessings,
Amy

Prayer Requests

Continue to pray for Angela.  She does not have much time left and their whole family can use some uplifting.

Joshua has been having some very trying times as of late and seems to be in a bit of a good spell.  Please pray that he can rest here for a while and enjoy some good time with his family.

His sister, Bethany, is recovering from open heart surgery and is having some complications.  Pray that these start to resolve and that she have quick healing.  Pray also for their mom, Kate, as she is surely being challenged with all she has on her plate.

Phoebe will be starting her next round of chemo next week.  She has been separated from her mom and brothers for 10+ days due to nasty virus going through the family.  Please pray for all of them as this has been extremely heavy on their hearts.

Christian had a great 4 year check up.  Please pray that he will continue to thrive and grow.  Please take a few moments to watch the moving ISR video on their site.  This training is invaluable.

Josiah was enrolled in the hospice program this week.  Please keep them all in your prayers.

Jamie is still recovering from her broken back.  She has a lot on the back burner while this heals, and the entire family could use a lot of prayers.

Blessings,
Amy

Pray for Noah

I'm going to cut and paste Noah's mom's Facebook update here for those who are not friends with her there.  Please keep them in your prayers.

Just finished speaking with Dr. B. Noah's urine grew out one of his usual culprits. It's fairly clear at this point that the gentomycin (antibiotic) bladder washes are no longer holding infections at bay. We're going to continue them for the meantime while Dr. B talks to urology and infectious disease, after which point we might just try vinegar bladder washes.

Noah is still looking fairly rough. He can have a very, very short burst of concentrated energy but within a few minutes all of the color literally drains from his face and he is totally worn out. As long as he is basically resting (using his ipad, playing quietly with Lego,s etc. he seems pretty good but even then he is very pale with dark, dark circles under his very sunken eyes.

We need to find a way out of this. We had such a great summer with no infections, and I'll always be thankful that the gentomycin worked at least that long. . . . I just expected it to last a lot longer
. While the 2 bugs he keeps growing are susceptible to the antibiotics he's taking (at least they are in a lab setting!), they are not being eradicated by them in Noah's body, so they rear their ugly heads again almost as soon as the antibiotics are stopped. Dr. B will be revisiting the idea of continuous antibiotics when he speaks to the infectious disease doctor next week. This would come at a great price to Noah - IF it worked, it would hold the bacteria at bay longer but it would also probably hasten the development of a totally resistant bug and therefore potentially hasten the end of Noah's life. It's an agonizing quality/quantity debate and it may not be something that we can even do anyway.

We will be repeating all of his labs right away on Monday and will plan to go to Greenville Tuesday for a transfusion if needed. If Noah is doing all right, I'll be going to Greenville Monday for a greatly-needed once a month "big shopping." I dislike the idea of going two days in a row but there is no way I would drag Noah around to stores the way he is feeling right now.

Emerson discharged at the end of last week... we quietly escaped from the hospital & disappeared for the weekend :) no computers, no phones (didn't even call the hospital to check lab results!)... lots of unpacking & laundry today. I'll update later in the week once we've gotten settled in back at home :)

Phoebe is home from the hospital.  Pray that she continues to do well.

Urgent Prayer Requests

Please pray for Tricia.  She is in rejection from a lung transplant and things are not looking good.  She really needs our prayers.

Phoebe is back in the hospital, she became very dehydrated and is in ICU.  She should be able to move to the floor soon.

Emerson is in desperate need of prayer.  Her mom's latest Facebook entry:
Talks continue re: how best to achieve comfort/supportive care for Emerson. On my request, all have stopped short of recommending hospice. The doctor on service today, who hasn’t seen Emerson since her last admission, said the extent of recent disease progression is “staggering”. The main (& really only) goal right now is to get Emerson home. I’m not sure I can buy into their expected course for the rest of Eme’s days here on earth, but I do agree that she needs to go home. We are once again battling low potassium and irregular heart rhythms. The plan is to stabilize that as best as possible this weekend, order IV antibiotics Monday, and discharge Tuesday. It will be bitter sweet… she is not better, she just needs to be home.

Christian and his family had a wonderful time in Mexico!

Joshua is still having a lot of pain and they are working to keep it under control and give him some comfort.

Eli is doing well walking, but this is causing some other not so good issues.  He's also having problems with his eyes.  He can use lots of prayers.

Ava has had a rough month illness wise.  She has an appointment in July that they are hopeful will bring some answers.

Waverly & Oliver are currently doing well.  They are going to be staying in their same school next year.

Witt is going to be a big brother!

Jamie and her family have had some very good news on both the medical and the financial fronts!

Urgent Prayer Request - Emerson

Emerson needs our prayers - she took a turn for the worse last night, I'll share her mom's most recent Facebook updates here:

Emerson needs your prayers this morning... please pass on the request. Things took a turn for the worse overnight. She is now growing yeast in her blood. Gram negative, gram positive & yeast. Potentially now a new, second gram positive too. Her infections don't appear to be responding to the many antibiotics running through her. Her temp overnight was high. Her heart rate is not elevating appropriately. Her blood pressure is not responding appropriately. She is not sleeping well. Several things are not "right" now. I've always had a reliable gut feeling with her & my gut feeling this morning is I'm worried.

Thank You so much for all your prayers & thoughtful comments - they bring me great comfort though the difficult times (& there have been many). Today was a relatively good, stable day considering she is battling a very serious infection. Emerson continues to spike fevers through all the antibiotics & there is intense discussion now about what to do next & how aggressively to treat. The answers don't come easily - they haven't for a while...

Tuesday Prayer Requests and Updates

Christian was brought to my attention through a comment on the blog.  He was born with a bilateral cleft palate and lip and is almost completely blind.  Please keep this precious child in your prayers.  Stop by the blog and let the family know you are in prayer for them!

Phoebe is back in patient for her next round of chemo.  Pray that all goes well and that she will be back home soon!

Ashlynn's family received some devastating news from their CT scan.  65%-75% of her brain is perished and she is blind.  They can use all of your prayers.

Jonah and family took a fun family trip this weekend!

Ashley's central line is still infected after a month.  She is otherwise doing well, but they really need to get this cleared up!!

Jacob received some DNA/gene news that they had been waiting for.

Battley has been meeting some new friends and having fun outings.  There are some cute pictures on the blog of her new, sweet little swim suit and cover up!  So darling!

Owen and family had a crazy weekend but peaceful Sunday, and had some fun at the water park yesterday!

I want to thank all of the readers on the blog who pray for all of these sweeties and their families.  I love the encouraging and positive messages I receive from you!  I urge you to share our blog with your readers so we can grow.  Tell them what we do and encourage them so come pray, and to share our site as well.  I've also added the option to share the blog on Facebook and Twitter.  It's on the right side of the page.  The more people we have praying, the better!  If you know of anyone in need of prayer, please leave a message here on the blog or send an email to Safe Haven Blog.

Update on Noah

This is the latest update on Noah, from his mom Kate's Facebook page.  Please keep them uplifted in prayer.

Just got home from our ortho appointment. It was a hard appointment. Noah has very tight ankles and knees (his feet are pulled back toward his calves and his knees don't straighten completely). It's a lot worse than it was at our last visit earlier this year. We'd hoped that we could use night-time splints to gradually stretch his ankles. These are splints that are initially set to the same angle as the ankle and are gradually tightened to stretch the ankle back out and bring it into correct positioning.

After looking Noah over, our ortho feels that Noah's ankles are too tight for the splints to work and that the only way to improve his ankle tone would be to do surgery on both ankles. His knees are in the same situation. We won't do surgery (and he didn't recommend doing it) because there is no point - if we thought he'd be walking, we'd do it because he couldn't ever walk again with these contractures in his ankles and knees.

It just made us so sad. He recommended AFO's (ankle foot orthotics) made to Noah's foot angle just to keep his feet from pulling back even more. He said they almost certainly will continue to contract, but wearing AFO's should slow it down.

Like Jeff commented tonight, there just aren't any good doctor's visits any more. There are no more quick fixes, easy plans, or simple decisions.

Noah still looks "OK" - not terrible, not great. He's not sick but doesn't seem totally well either.

Monday Updates

Continue to pray for Noah.  His mom’s most recent Facebook updates:

Noah has looked "off" since his transfusion. His heart rate is up and he now has a fever of 101.5.

We now HAVE to get blood from a vein. This is going to really stress him out after they spent so long trying to get a vein this afternoon.

This could be a transfusion reaction or an infection, so they are doing infection labs - blood cultures from broviac and a vein, urine cultures, CBC, etc as well as labs for a hemolytic reaction.

He has only been off antibiotics for 4 1/2 days.

I am heartbroken.

Finally got blood late last night. Fever climbed quite a but is down now with IV ibuprofen. I haven't seen his labs yet.
Moved 2 doors down to a much larger room.

Amy can use lots of prayers as she starts a new journey in her life.

Charity had a wonderful time at a great “Red Carpet” event last night!  They have been enjoying some time at the park and had a fantastic Mother’s Day!

Ella is doing very well after surgery and has been seizure free for about 35 days!

Jonah and his family recently took a trip to visit family and had a great time.  His parents just celebrated their 8th wedding anniversary and their event, “Jogging for Jonah” was a success!

Owen and family have been battling the sickies.  Pray that they would all be doing better soon!!

Veiyah was granted her “Make A Wish” wish and she and her family when to Disney at the end of April!

Blessings,
Amy

Jacob has been newly diagnosed with osteoporosis.  He is anxious to be able to get into the pool again coming up, and they are looking into purchasing a new handicap accessible van in the next month.

Cici had an overnight EEG this week for some sleep issues she has been having.  While they aren’t exactly sure what to do about the issues (or if anything needs to be done), they do know that it is not seizures, and this is great!

Amy

Update on the blog

Hi all:
I am three weeks out from my surgery, half way through my "recovery period" and doing better every day.  I continue to appreciate the sweet prayers and messages I've received.  Thank you!

In the next week or so I'm going to be rolling out a few changes in the way in which updates are posted and I think it's going to be a lot better.  The hope is that more updates get covered in a regular manner and I think it's going to work out wonderfully.  We shall see very soon! :)

As always, please feel free to leave any prayer requests in the comments, or send an email to safehaven_blog@yahoo.com.  If you have a blog, please share our blog with your readers.  Prayer is very powerful, and the more people we have praying, the better!!

Blessings,

Pray for Noah

Noah is not doing well and is headed shortly by ambulance to the hospital for a CT scan.  Please keep both him and his family in your prayers.

From his mom's Facebook update:

Dr. B and our nurse were here about 8 this morning. The nurse drew some labs and Dr. B decided he does want Noah to have a CT of his belly. His liver is enlarged and even though Noah was sleeping very deeply, he was whimpering in pain when Dr. B would press his tummy at all. :-(

The wrench in the works is that it will be best for Noah to go by ambulance which means the girls can't come with me. A sweet friend offered to come pick them up for as long as needed today while we get this taken care of. We are getting the CT done locally so it shouldn't be too terribly long.

The ambulance should be here in a little over an hour and I'll update when I know something.

Saturday Updates

Hello all!  Sorry I was MIA last week.  I have a big surgery coming up next Thursday and I have been busy prepping things for that as well as taking care of the every day things.  I thank you for the prayers you have sent me!!

Please keep Victoria and her family.  She sent me an email asking for prayers for them as she was pregnant with their second child when her placenta went bad at 22 weeks and they lost their sweet baby.  They also have a 4-year-old.  She is going to send me the link to her family blog once she has it updated, but in the meantime let's keep them in our prayers.

Please pray for Battley.  She was born on March 22 and has Trisomy 18.  Her family is enjoying each day they are given with her!

Tesha continues to work through her grief and her faith in the Lord, especially during such a trial, is amazing.

Phoebe had her last day of her third round of chemo yesterday and now they are just watching for any ill effects.  She had an extremely tough go after the last round, so please pray that she stays well and is able to go home!

Aviana is recovering at home from surgery.  Keep them in your prayers.

Carly just went to her first Daddy/Daughter dance at pre-school!

Christian is going into the hospital for an in-patient stay to monitor some new seizures he has been having.  He is going in Monday and is expected to be in for 3-5 days.  Keep them all in your prayers.

Jacob and family are looking at making the transition to public school and have an IEP meeting coming up next week.  They can use prayers for a smooth transition!

Lily is using her walker!

Tripp's mom continues to grieve the loss of her sweet boy and still has lots of emotional struggles.  Pray for her heart.

Grace is now officially a toddler and is working hard with PT to sit on her own!

Jonah is getting so big, and he's a funny boy!  Check out this cute post, his mom shares a lot of great conversations!

Anna was born on March 27, 2012 and went to Heaven five short hours later.  Please lift her family up in prayer.

God's Blessings on you during this holy weekend!
Amy

A Few Easter Updates

Noah had some fun with some furry friends.  He is still fighting a yucky infection in his bladder, in addition to having some line troubles.   Keep him in your prayers this Easter weekend.
Taleah has a 2 week break from Chemo.  Pray that all goes well so she and her family can enjoy the break.
Wesley got his new van and some massaging.  He continues to make progress.  Praises!
The Bolte family is taking steps towards adoption.  They were asked to set up a bed for the one to be joining the family.  This was an especially hard task because it meant travelling through feelings that were put away on a shelf.  Keep them in your prayers as they trust in God for the next part of this journey.
Reagan is still not feeling great.  Keep her in your prayers.

It's also been a month since the Cretzmans lost their daughter in an accident.  Continue praying for them as well.
